Protect the local copy without overstating control
When access or sync fails, preserve the original local and provider copies before changing locks, credentials or client settings. Diagnose account, link, sync-client, Windows-permission and local-lock layers one at a time.
An event planner prepares a fictional vendor-contract package on an approved Windows production laptop, tests the relevant layer and keeps the working source separate.
Run the control sequence
- 01
Stop repeated retries and preserve the original contract set.
- 02
Record provider status, client version, Windows profile and local lock state.
- 03
Work from a verified duplicate when testing changes.
- 04
Compare provider, offline and restored copies by size and timestamp.
- 05
Document the corrected layer, remaining limitation and rollback path.
Preserve decision evidence
Record symptom, provider folder, local path, versions, Windows profile, lock state, duplicate, actions, result and escalation owner.
Stop when
- The only local copy is modified during repair.
- Password or MFA recovery is attempted outside account policy.
- A sync conflict is overwritten without comparison.
Keep secrets and unnecessary vendor data out of the decision record.
Separate local and provider controls
PC-side folder access is not provider-side encryption, Dropbox account recovery, sharing-link control, MFA, permission bypass, guaranteed backup or full-device security.
Local sync questions
Does local folder access control the Dropbox account?
No. Dropbox permissions, links, MFA, sessions and recovery remain provider controls.
Is sync an independent backup?
No. Test a separately stored recovery copy outside the same account and device failure domain.
