Protect the local copy without overstating control
Sync is not backup and an offline copy can diverge from the provider copy. Before travel or venue work, test offline availability, conflict naming, version recovery and an independently stored recovery copy.
An event planner prepares a fictional vendor-contract package on an approved Windows production laptop, tests the relevant layer and keeps the working source separate.
Run the control sequence
- 01
Choose a fictional contract and note its provider version.
- 02
Make the file available offline on the approved event laptop.
- 03
Create a controlled conflict and observe the client behavior.
- 04
Restore the intended version without overwriting the only copy.
- 05
Verify an independent recovery copy outside the sync failure domain.
Preserve decision evidence
Record provider version, local timestamp, offline result, conflict name, restore path, recovery copy and next drill date.
Stop when
- Sync completion is treated as backup success.
- Conflicts are resolved by deleting an unknown version.
- The recovery copy shares the same account or device.
Keep secrets and unnecessary vendor data out of the decision record.
Separate local and provider controls
PC-side folder access is not provider-side encryption, Dropbox account recovery, sharing-link control, MFA, permission bypass, guaranteed backup or full-device security.
Local sync questions
Does local folder access control the Dropbox account?
No. Dropbox permissions, links, MFA, sessions and recovery remain provider controls.
Is sync an independent backup?
No. Test a separately stored recovery copy outside the same account and device failure domain.
